Overview

Dr Man Kung
Mr Mei Jie’s Research on Jin Ping Mei

Mr Mei Jie, courtesy name Tingxiu, is a world-renowned scholar specializing in Dream of the Red Chamber and Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase). Dream of the Red Chamber has achieved widespread acclaim across the literary world and is hailed by scholars and writers globally as a must-read masterpiece. In contrast, Jin Ping Mei contains extensive erotic content and was repeatedly banned and destroyed by official authorities throughout successive dynasties to prevent it from corrupting public morals. As a result, its circulation remained limited. Beginning in 1985, Mr Mei Jie single-handedly dedicated nearly twenty years to completing three rounds of textual collation, culminating in the Mengmeiguan Definitive Edition of Jin Ping Mei Cihua. This edition is now widely recognized by the academic community as the finest authoritative text of Jin Ping Mei, representing a monumental contribution to academia. Having lived in seclusion in Hong Kong for fifty years, Mr Mei Jie finds joy exclusively in reading and writing, seeking neither fame nor recognition. He stands as a true model of single-minded devotion to scholarship. This lecture introduces his collated edition of Jin Ping Mei, while also presenting this extraordinary Ming Dynasty masterpiece to the audience.

Dr. Stephen Suen
Qingwen - A Charming Figure in the Dreams of the Chamber of Young Snow

Within the literary lineage of Dream of the Red Chamber, while Qingwen is not included in the "Twelve Beauties of Jinling" (the main register), she stands at the head of the "Sub-Supplementary Register." She is far more than a maid with a distinct personality; she is a character of immense dramatic tension crafted by Cao Xueqin. Her iconic episodes, such as "Tearing the Fan" and "Mending the Feather Vest," reveal her vibrant and unyielding nature. These vivid scenes have long served as vital artistic inspiration, widely adapted and interpreted across various forms of traditional Chinese opera.

The character of Qingwen embodies not only intense theatricality but also profound narrative depth. In this lecture, we will examine her artistic persona from multiple dimensions, delving into the ethical and philosophical implications underlying her story, and inviting the audience to rediscover this unforgettable female figure from the literary classic.
