Exhibition Overview:
Hong Kong has always been a crossroad between Chinese and Western cultures. In times of upheaval, it also serves as a refuge harbour for Chinese painting and calligraphy traditions to find shelter, continuity, and renewal. During the political and social changes in the mainland in the 1940s, a number of distinguished Chinese painters migrated southwards to Hong Kong. In the Fragrant Harbour, they found home to continue creation and teaching. Based on their rich inheritance of Chinese painting, they developed distinct artistic paths on this open and cosmopolitan ground, forging Hong Kong into a notable site for the continuation and transformation of Chinese art painting.
The Chamber of Young Snow has collected, over time, many outstanding works by major Chinese painters. This exhibition brings together selected works mostly created in Hong Kong by five masters—Li Yanshan, Ding Yanyong, Zhao Shaoang, Lu Shoukun, and Huang Yongyu. With the theme of The Cultural Continuum in Hong Kong, the exhibition shows how each master, through the language of brush and ink, pursued a distinct artistic course along the shores of the Fragrant Harbour.
In this exhibition, each piece of work bears the living roots of Chinese traditional culture, while Hong Kong itself stands as witness to the artists’ perseverance, adaptation, and birth. Although these five southbound painters developed strikingly different artistic languages, they all carried forward the lineage of Chinese painting on Hong Kong soil while advancing both the transmission and reinvention of art tradition. Their works are not only the distilled achievements of individual artistic masters, but also a vivid record of the southward migration of modern Chinese culture into Hong Kong in recent era, and a proof of the role of the Fragrant Harbour as a place where Chinese and Western cultures fuse and develop together.

2. Algorithmic Brushstrokes: Animating Hong Kong's Ink Masters
Co-developed and created by the Arts Tech Lab team of HKU Faculty of Arts, "Algorithmic Brushstrokes" reconstructs the Southbound Masters' legacy through a rigorous academic and technical perspectives. This work utilizes the team's custom generative AI workflows to deeply analyze historical ink patterns and signature brushwork. Through advanced prompt engineering, the team extracts and synthesizes each master's distinct style, translating traditional ink wash into a dynamic digital dialogue. This exhibition bridges media archaeology and modern computing, allowing historical brushstrokes to flow through algorithms while preserving the humanism of Chinese ink in the digital age.
3. "Ink Wonderland" recreates the elegant ambiance of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, centred around a classical scholar's desk, complemented by a landscape screen, ink art, and the Four Treasures of the Study. Visitors may sit at the desk like a classical literatus, pose in front of the flowing ink, and immerse themselves in a space where tradition and modernity, as well as past and present beautifully intersect.
